The most sustainable object is the one you already own, kept working. No new materials mined, no factory run, no shipping, no packaging. Repair beats recycling, because recycling still melts things down and remakes them; repair skips all of that. Yet most of us throw away things that a ten-minute fix would save, because we were never taught that fixing is an option.
This is a starting guide for reluctant fixers.
Why we replace things that still work
Three forces push us toward the bin:
- Design: glued seams, non-removable batteries, and proprietary screws make products hard to open on purpose. This is the fight the right-to-repair movement is about, and it is slowly being won.
- Price: a new one is often cheap enough that fixing feels like effort for no reward. But cheap-and-replaced repeatedly costs more than one good item maintained, and it externalises the waste onto everyone.
- Fear: most people believe they will break it worse. This is the real barrier, and it is the easiest to remove.
Start where the risk is lowest
You do not learn to repair on your laptop. You learn on things that are already half-broken, where you cannot make it much worse.
- Clothes are the perfect entry point. A popped button, a split seam, a small hole. Thread and a needle cost almost nothing, and a wonky first stitch is invisible from a metre away. Visible mending, where you make the repair a feature with contrasting thread, removes the pressure to be perfect entirely.
- Furniture: a wobbly chair is usually a loose screw or dried-out joint, not a dead chair. Tighten first, re-glue second.
- Small electricals: a lamp that stopped working is often a dead bulb, a loose plug wire, or a blown fuse, all of which are safe and simple with the power off.
Win on something small and cheap. Confidence is the actual skill; technique follows.
The three questions before you bin anything
- What actually failed? "It stopped working" is not a diagnosis. A blender that died might have a jammed motor, a broken switch, or just a tripped thermal cutout that resets after ten minutes. Search the model number plus the symptom before you decide it is dead.
- Is the part replaceable? Batteries, cables, filters, seals, buttons, and fuses are usually cheap and standard. If the broken part is one of these, the repair is likely trivial.
- Has someone fixed this exact thing? They have. There is a video or a forum thread for nearly every consumer product ever made. iFixit alone has free guides for thousands of devices, with part suppliers linked.
Tools worth owning
You can fix a surprising amount with very little:
- A precision screwdriver set with swappable bits, including the odd security shapes manufacturers use to keep you out.
- A sewing kit: needles, a few thread colours, and scissors.
- Sugru or a good glue for the "it just needs to hold" jobs.
- A multimeter once you are comfortable, to tell a dead component from a dead connection.
That is under the price of a single mid-range appliance, and it will save you many.
When replacing is the right call
Repair is not a religion. Replace when a device is genuinely unsafe, when the repair costs more than a used replacement and the part keeps failing, or when a much more efficient model saves real energy over years, as with a decades-old fridge. The honest answer is sometimes "let it go." The point is to make that a decision you reach, not a reflex you skip to.
Pick one broken thing this week. Diagnose it before you judge it. Fix the easiest thing you own, badly, and notice that the world did not end. That is the whole practice.
